Where? – ShanDong Mama .. but first …
Melbourne in Australia was amongst the richest cities in the world at the turn of the 20th century around 1900. This fact is closely connected to why they also have some of the greatest dumplings and most authentic Chinese food (across all regions!) outside China and Hong Kong.

Why?

Melbourne was rich before Australia even was officially a country in 1901. In the latter part of the 1800s, there was gold discovered in Victoria (colony and later a state, of which Melbourne is the capital). Just like California at a similar time, people came from all over the world to try and strike it rich, including people from greater China. This is the origin of Chinese people and food in Australia which generations later resulted in some of the best Chinese food you will find anywhere.

So that brings me to ShanDong Mama and their crazy delicious and unique dumplings.

I am lucky that I get to travel to Melbourne for Christmas and the Southern Hemisphere Summer, as a break from the cold in New York. On a trip about six years ago, I discovered this dumpling spot called Shandong Mama with my mother-in law. Let’s just say that I seriously crave these dumplings all year until I go back again so I can taste it again!

What makes these morsels so unique?

Well, watch and find out! But Shandong province in the Northeast of China on the coast (near the Korean peninsula) is one of the lesser known regions of China and Chinese cuisine both outside China and even within. ShanDong MaMa was started by an immigrant mother and daughter team to bring together some of the unique cooking styles from the region, the use of seafood, as well as their regional flavors, to the western palette.

And by doing things like their now famous Spanish Mackerel (fish) Dumplings by creating this fish mousse which makes me drool, they have also attracted the attention and love of both the general local public and Australian celebrity chefs alike. And let’s not forget about their “Melbourne Dumpling,” which mixes the local flavors of Melbourne with the regional flavors of Shandong!

In this video, I also taste the now rapidly expanding Happy Lemon ‘Salted Cheese’ Bubble Tea. Originally founded in Shanghai, China, in 2006, stores are now in 100+ cities around the world, and their unique flavor is delighting both Bubble Tea enthusiasts and newcomers!
