🍱 *What is “Ekiben”?*
Ekiben – the delicious love child of “eki” (the Japanese for “train station”) and “bento” (Japanese lunchboxes) filled with local delicacies – are a unique part of Japanese culture that were originally created to be enjoyed by Japanese salarymen on long business trip train journeys, but these days these delicious lunch boxes are a staple in Japan life and have such a fan following that people travel around the country solely for the purpose of trying the local bento, which is exactly what we did!

The most exciting part of “ekiben” is that you can try different flavours of local cuisine from different prefectures without even leaving the station! You’ll find various ekiben at any train station around Japan, and if you take a shinkansen bullet train in Japan, you can’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a high speed ekiben lunch, but you don’t even need to take a train to enjoy them (in fact, you can also bring them home as they make great food souvenirs)!

📍 *LOCATION & INFO*
In today’s Japan travel vlog, we’re in Yokohama, just under an hour away from the ekiben heaven of Tokyo Station to try one of Japan’s best-selling bento boxes from Kiyoken. Yokohama is known for having Asia’s largest Chinatown with over 600 shops and some of the best Chinese food outside of China, so it makes sense for the bento sold here to incorporate a taste of China, which is where Kiyoken’s shumai (traditional Chinese siu mai dumplings) come in, claiming to summarise the taste of Yokohama with their Japanese-Chinese food fusion. Kiyoken’s Chinese-style shumai bento is one of the country’s most famous ekiben and has been a firm favourite since it first went on sale back in 1928, but while you’ll find Kiyoken bento all over the country, we’re in its hometown of Yokohama to try some boxes exclusive to the Tokyo/Kanagawa region as well as its best-selling shumai!

*What to eat*
We ordered Kiyoken’s signature Shumai Dumpling Bento Lunch Box, Yokohama Pilaf, Shumai-man (steamed meat buns with shumai filling), a chestnut mooncake & a Yokohama pineapple cake
Want to savour the taste for longer? Kiyoken offers vacuum-packed shiumai that can be stored at room temperature and enjoyed up to 5 months after production!
Not a carnivore? Kiyoken also offers vegetarian bento!
